I come from a family of smokers and alcoholics. I myself never plan on becoming one, I've already lost a grandmother from lung cancer. I know the effects of smoking and alcohol and how addicting it is, not to mention how stubborn my family is. I want to try and get some of them to quit, but they're all stubborn. Seeing how the majority of them have been smoking and drinking over 15 years, i need a way to get throgh to them, or else im worried i will lose more and more relatives from disease. I come from a very big and close family and id like to keep it that way.

Here is what I believe. Addiction is a word that is used for doctors and rehab workers to be able to make money. Addiction is a word that is used for people that want to smoke, or drink because they do not have to take responsibility for their habits if they are 'hooked'. I smoked cigarettes and cigars for a little over 30 years because I wanted to smoke. I knew what smoking does to you. But I wanted to smoke for the same reason that everyone else does. I wanted instant gratification of a want. I liked to smoke. I liked to get and be high. I smoked pot for 30 years. Because I liked being high. I drank beer and whiskey. Because I liked being drunk. ALWAYS did it at home. No drinking and driving for me. But I liked to get buzzed. I realize now that I did these things because I WANTED to. Not because I couldn't stop, but because I did not WANT to stop. I no longer smoke cigarettes or cigars. I no longer smoke pot. I no longer drink beer or whiskey. I now love to live for Jesus, and do not WANT to do those other things any more. People that serve theirself as gods will never give up their bad habits. That's just the way it is. 'Addiction' is a word for selfish people who do not want to take the blame or responsibility for their own actions and choices. It is agreed to by doctors and health care workers that see the potential for making money from it.

I guess some people just don't admit they need help. Just like my dad. He died of lung cancer when I was 11. My mother has quit drinking for 4 years now. It will only take the loss of someone close from cancer for people to really stop. Some people will never stop. You just got to appreciate things the way they are sometimes. Especially when it comes to family because when people don't want to change they won't.

people do not do things that they do not want or are not ready to do. Like a diet, people will know that they need to diet because of diabetes but they just will not stop eating things with sugar. Same for smoking, they would not give it up, even when someone in the close family die from smoking

I quit smoking 5 years ago. No matter what you do it up to them. All i can tell you is if you are still living with your parents, tell them you want to move out to a friend or relatives house. No reason for you to live with that. Tell them if they clean up that you will come back, otherwise say goodbye and get out.

well if u tried resoning with them....then idk wat else u can do.....but in my opinion the reason they smoke or drink is becuz they are sad or have nohting else to do and....becuz they are addicted....i guess u could try to treaten them that u will run away unless they try to quit....that will get through to them becuz like u they probable dont want to lose any more family members either....
