Before you shoot, plan out how you want each cut (or "block" as you called it) to look. The most common shots for a scene with characters talking to each other are
1.one wide shot (entire scene)
2. coverage of character A (shoot A over B's shoulder, or just A's head, head and shoulders, etc.)
3. Coverage of character b (same as above)
Start out shooting with both of your characters in the frame. Once your scene is finished, have them repeat the scene with the camera shooting at character A and repeat the whole scene, even if B doesnt show up in frame. Then repeat for character B. After you have your perfect takes, upload them into a computer via USB or Firewire cable into Windows Movie Maker, iMovie, Premiere pro, Vegas, etc. or your whatever your favorite editing program is. Then cut the scenes so that whenever you (the director, Im assuming) thinks the shot should change, just slip in a shot from another camera angle. I don't want to get into too much detail here, as you could be reading until your 50, so I'll touch on HD cams. Now onto HD cams. HD cams wont give you a movie-like effect per se, but what they will do is make it more convincing when you do try to create a movie-like effect. The film-look is made up of a lot of factors, but the ones we notice most are the color/contrast/saturation differences of film and video as well as the "blurry background" that everyone notices in movies. Other factors include motion (speed of the individual pictures), camera motion, lighting, and composition. Acting, make up, set design, and sound can also be considered, but IMO that goes under the "hollywood look" while some people say that is also part of the film look. HD just helps make film look more like the movies because of its increased frame size and progressive (720 at least) scan. But just having HD and nothing else will still result in (guess what?) a non film (aka video) look. Personally, I think you should wait before you go HD. Not many people have HD sets, and you might as well get a good, prosumer level SD cam for around $1500-$2000, whereas a good prosumer level HD cam would cost around $3000-$4000.
So I hope this helped. And like I said, I always like meeting other filmmakers so feel free to contact me anytime at evilgenius4930@yahoo.com
