Take whatever ideas you already have and make an appointment to work something out with a tattoo artist.

Most tattoo artists have amazing imaginations as well as insight, and will work with your ideas to try and can come up with something to blow you away.

A plaited sign to denote success and protection against evil forces. It is found on a Sumerian seal and on a picture stone found in Gotland, Sweden, dating from the early part of the Viking era.
It is an interesting fact that plaited signs are often considered having magic qualities.

You could combine it with something like this

The carnation is a sign of affection, health and energy! But be careful about color :D
Striped carnations and yellow can mean refusal and disdain!

Also, Butterflies are often considered by many cultures as a symbol of joy, happiness, of spring, rebirth and renewal.

A butterfly might just be your tattoo to symbolize your new life as a healthier person!

The best part is bringing your ideas to your tattoo professional. These people are ARTISTS! If you bring them in some ideas, they can work a number of symbols into one, beautiful piece of art! Be open to suggestion and do not be afraid to say if you don't like something. These things are permanent!

How about a Bleeding Heart plant? These flowers are strong, resilient and thrive in all sorts of conditions. Plus, they're pretty.

why not get an actual heart (an anatomical one, not a valentine one) with like sunshine rays coming from behind it? a tattoo doesn't have to 'mean' anything to anybody else but you. it doesn't have to be a literal symbol that anybody else would recognize, as long as it reminds you of your ordeal and it would be an interesting conversation piece. good luck!

Lotus Flower, signifies overcoming or rising above. It grows from bottom reaching to sunlight and blooms when it reaches surface.

You might try finding a chinese character that represents one of those words. Check out this sight for some ideas. You can search by subject or by individual letters of the alphabet.
