There's a book called ' Napoleon's Glands ' written by a doctor. It's really about historical forensics that can pinpoint what a person had based on the symptoms they were said to have had. Whether he was amazing, is a subjective thing. I prefer the seventeenth century Dutch and Flemish masters. He was more given to periods of imbalance. He made sage technical observations on materials and techniques. I doubt he was an all out loony. A tormented man, to be sure. I have sympathy for him. On the more mercenary side I wouldn't mind finding a piece of his ... for sale. Then obtain stuff I really like. There are actually only one or two of his works I can unreservedly say I liked.

yes - totally amazing.
No, not insane - well, not of his own accord. I was taught - by an very intelligent man that Van gogh was incorrectly medicated through out his adulthood. He had a constant ringing in the ear - but, was being treated for epilepsy. the medication he was given was mind controlling - and he still had to deal with the ringing in his ear. That alone made him act out of the ordinary.
Outside of the stereo-typical artist weirdness - i think this is what made him "crazy" to those who dont fully study his work and his life. Those of us - who know, can only see him for his greatness.

paintings and drawings include some of the world's best known, most popular and most expensive pieces. He suffered from recurrent bouts of mental illness — about which there are many competing theories — and during one episode cut off a part of his ear.

There are many speculations concerning Van gogh's state of mind. I as well as many others do not feel that he was insane. Many modern day psychologists feel that he suffered from bi-polar disorder, some think epilepsy(so did Van gogh), besides this he did suffer from alcoholism, being socially awkward, and possesssing a personality that most considered to be too intense. Now, to clear up the myth behind the severed ear(hopefully once and for all),contrary to what many schools will teach you (primarily high school)-- Van gogh did not cut off his ear and send it to an estranged love! He cut off his ear after an altercation with Paul Gauguin. Van gogh had the razor because, out of impulse, he intended to attack Gauguin with it-- instead (once again out of impulse) he turned the razor on himself out of frustration. He then stumbled in a daze to one of he and Gauguins favorite brothels and presented the ear to a prostitute he often spent time with. You should read the book of Van gogh's letters sent to his brother throughout his life.

poor Vincent had some issues, he fell in love with a hooker and cut off his ear and gave it to her because she once said he had cute ears. he took his own life in an insane asylum, doesn't mean he was always insane, but in that moment he was. i think he was badly taken advantage of by those around him (his brother hoarded some of his paintings), and that angered him...so i think he was a very angry man, not necessarily insane... and the sad truth is no one recognizes genius until it is gone.

Very likely. He cut off his ear to get even with a prostitute; he shot himself in the stomach; he voluntarily commited himself to an asylum; he attacked Gauguin...any other insights needed?

From my readings I understood him to be more in a depressed state. But such deep depression that it affected his ability to function in the daily world of what we call normalcy. He was tormented by mental demons of one kind or another, but man could he use colors in a most vivid way, using unorthodox methods. He did not take his painting impersonally
