checking out in line at the grocery store?

Not if they're talking quietly and as long as they stop once they get to the cashier. It's rude to talk while the cashier is bagging because he/she may have a question or want to be polite by saying hello.

Yes, actually I do. I think using your cell phone in any situation where someone may have to talk to you is rude. It puts the cashier in an awkward place because he or she may not want to be rude by interrupting the conversation. It also rude to the people who have to wait in line behind you, because many people aren't paying attention so that holds up the line. It also sends the message that the person on the phone feels he is too good to speak to the person waiting on him. I can't tell you how many times a cashier has greeted their customer and tried to be pleasant only to get ignored because the customer is yapping away.

You know, cel phones are just for convenience. I don't mind if people are talking in a checkout line as long as:

-They pay attention and don't slow down the line
-Mind their tone and voice volume

Otherwise, I think it's rude. Even in the aisles. This one woman the other day was talking about her sex experience with some "loser" two nights before. After she hung up with one of her friends, she called another and told the same story. I could hear her from the Canned Goods to the Veggies section!

OY!

Yes, it is rude. They should be getting ready to pay, interacting with the grocery clerk and doing whatever necessary to keep the line moving. People on the cell phone are usually not paying attention to anything around them and will likely delay paying, delay moving on and hold up the line behind them.

Depends -- if it is NOT an emergency or a call from the employer -- then one needs to not answer the phone and concentrate on the check-out process to make sure that they are NOT overcharged!

The ONLY other time I would answer like that is IF/WHEN my own siblings are calling from their overseas duty stations -- to make sure that I am OK. With the time differences -- and the fact that we are all military -- then YES, it IS important, and I do answer at that time. This is for my safety since I live as a Single -- and I am glad they do this to make sure that I am fine.

Yes,

and especially when they walk down an aisle in the grocery store and are distracted and almost knock you over. THey're so busy on their cell phone.

I believe in 2 years tops, people will try to hide from their cell phones. They won't like being traced so easily.

GOD bless.

Yes, unless it's an emergency. I hear more about some peoples personal lives than I need to know. Some Will even carry on a conversation about their personal life right out in public then turn around accuse you of listening to their business. If they want it to be private they should make the call somewhere where it is private.

as long as they aren't talking about something really inappropriate, i don't think talking on cell phones in line at the store is bad. you can still be courteous to the cashier and say hi without having to end your phone conversation. multi-task people! sometimes it's just necessary. but i do agree, that if you are talking extremely loud or about obscene topics, then that is rude and obnoxious.

YES!!! Don't get me started on idiots and their cell phones. Why do manners go out the door the minute some moron picks up their cell phone.

While standing in line, no. While actually checking out, it's at least distracting, because the checker may need to ask them some questions.
