I have a Sony 1080p tv. I'm looking at my HD DVD player i just bought and it says that it is a progressive scan and it has an output of 1080i or 720p via a HDMI. Does this mean i won't be able to watch it in 1080i because i have a 1080p? Will i have to have a 1080i tv? My calbe output is a 1080i output, will this mean that the picture will look better on a 1080i tv or my 1080p tv? I somehow feel like i should have bought a 1080i tv because i won't be able to play things that are in 1080i, am i totally off on this?

thx for the help.

OK simply "p" is better then "i"

"p" or progressive means that your device will display Information to one line of pixels I.E.
720p displays 720 vertical pixels
1080p displays 1080 vertical pixels.

"i" means interlaced which means the pixels are shared so
720i shares two lines of pixels
same with 1080i

Progressive is always a better image
so 720p often looks as good as 1080i

Your TV being able to support 1080p will show all lesser formats.

You do not need anything else to view any format of HD.

It is up to you to play with resolution to see what subjectively looks best on your TV.

Both Blue-ray and HD-DVD play in 720p
which is considered TRUE HD.

You made a good choice buying a 1080p TV but it will be a while before your peripherals are up to exploiting 1080p.

Hope this helps

Your can watch dvds from your tv at 1080p but since your dvd player can only display at 1080i, your tv will have to convert the signal from your player to 1080p.The I means Interlace and the P stands for Progressive--1080p will give you a slightly better picture quality, but most people won't even see it. The bigger your tv the better 1080p will look. A 1080p tv only mean that your tv can display the max resolution at 1080p, it does not require any other devices connect to it to be 1080p. If need be your tv will convert all the signal it receives to 1080p.

For the true 1080p viewing experience you have to get a Blu-ray player and watch a blu-ray movie. These players are backward compatible and will play all other standard prerecorded movies by down converting them to 1080i.Presently Sony,Panasonic & Samsung Blu-ray players are availible.TV programs are broadcasted only in 1080i
Currently no other source has 1080p resolution
