Ok, we just got a new bloodhound puppy yesterday(he is 6 weeks old) we are wanting to crate train him like we did our other dog. But he HATES it. He will howl and yelp for a long time. We don't want him sleeping with us...but we put him in his cage and he wont stop. Any suggestions?

It is hard to train a puppy that age to be alone. It is too young to be away from its mom and littermates. That is why good breeders wait until they are 8+ weeks. Makes things WAY easier!!!!! Two weeks makes a great difference.

thats what all puppys do! you just have to make sure you don't let him hFinally! You're going to adopt that new puppy or bring home a great new older dog to join your family. make him feel comfortable and protect your home.

Dog Kennel (Crate)
A kennel or crate is a must. Most puppies will not soil their kennel (if it's not too big), so you can leave a young puppy inside for a few hours. This helps him learn to control himself, accelerating the housetraining process. If you buy a crate sized for an adult dog, but your puppy is still small, fill up some of the space with a closed cardboard box. Leave the puppy enough room to stand, turn around and lie down.

You can also use a kennel in your car to keep your dog, and your interior, safe. Some kennels are certified for air travel, but some are not. If you expect your pet ever to fly, consider purchasing an airline approved kennel.ave it his way, or else you will pay go here for more info

You just have to grit your teeth. Mine did the same thing. Try 1) hot water bottle. 2) laying a blanket over the crate (they find this more relaxing) and 3) keeping a radio on by the crate (this was very odd and I found my dog likes rap music) 4) Keep him in the crate but put the crate in your bedroom. But even doing these things the puppy will still cry sometimes. Grit your teeth, I know it broke my heart to hear my puppy do this but in the end having a perfectly potty trained puppy was worth it. I started this at 6 weeks also.

I'm jealous! I have an ex puppy mill Bloodhound and she is a sweetheart. You have to just put up with the crying until he realises it won't work. Believe me, you don't want a full grown Bloodhound in your bed. They hog it and are impossible to move if they don't want to go.

Try sleeping on the sofa for the first few nights with his kennel in view of you. That worked for my other dog when she was a baby. She was 13 weeks though. I'm sorry that someone was silly enough to sell you a puppy that young. Those first few weeks make the difference between an independent confident dog and a clingy whiner.

I know it sounds cruel but you will have to ignore this. Think of this behavior like you would a child who is being made to sleep in his own bed. He doesn't like it and he cries and whines. Well, what a mother does is she sits by his bed for a little while until he settles down and then goes back to her own bed. Junior isn't allowed to leave his bed.
For dogs just like for babies in this instance it depends on the puppy as to how long it takes for him to adjust. Just don't give in!
Buy some earplugs and close the door.

you need to teach him who's boss...place him in his cage and don't let him out if he starts howling....that just teaches him that if he makes enough noise he'll get his way...when he quiets down give him a treat to let him know that he's doing the right thing.
