A dog's sense of smell is much much more powerful than a human's . The same alcoholic smell emanating from nail polish and markers may be very faint to us, but it is immense for a dog.

Imagine pouring a bottle of alcohol down your nose. Thats how the dog feels, hence the craziness.

Dogs have more sensitive smell than humans so it would smell like a toxic garbage dump. Imagine cleaning the sewer system, thats how a dog would feel. Best thing to do is keep the toxic markers and nail polish away or use them while your dog is far away in another room.

Dogs have lots (and lots) more scent receptors in their noses than humans do. To you those chemicals are kinda stinky, to the dog it's tremendously horribly stinky. Using sound as an analogy: what to you is one voice shouting, to your dog is the sound system at a rock concert.

She is being exposed to the chemical and having a reaction, tell your girlfriend to use these things away from your dog. Like in another room with the door shut! My God use your common sense and please don't have children!
