Actually your premise is incorrect. It is not the price, it is the fact that there is no legal way for them to come to the US unless they can show they have money. One of the requirements for a visa is that you have to be a person who has money or property or a business in your own country. If you are poor, they think you will stay in the US to work, so you don't get a visa. Most illegal aliens paid someone between $2,000 and $5,000 to smuggle them into the US. All immigration applications are under $800. So, it is not the price of the application, it is just that poverty makes you ineligible for a visa.
If you already have a family member who is a citizen or resident or an employer who wants to sponsor you, or you are somehow famous, or if your government is trying to kill you, then it is OK if you are poor, they will let you apply.
Otherwise, you can pay whatever you want, stand in line all day and night, file all kinds of paper and wait for years, jump up and down, get lots of US citizens to vouch for you, doesn't matter, you are not getting in legally. Those are the people who come illegally.

I am an American living for now in Mexico. The main problem these people have for immigrating legally is that they do not understand how to acquire the legal documents.
Many that have applied for the legal documents are turned down because their government is afraid that if they visit, they will never come back. Or worse yet, they might bad-mouth their homeland and then the world would know what is really going on here. The government is corrupt, the police are corrupt and they are happy to have the majority of their people poor and futile. They are basically a peaceful people and this why they do not overthrow their corrupt government, they take the crap and just try to keep their families alive. Most people have ideas that they all live in little cardboard houses without water or electricity.
The US has its share of shanties as well.
Many Mexicans dream of visiting the US one day, but thats not to say that all of them do. There are also those who wouldn't go to the US if it was a free ride. There are just as many Mexicans that hate Americans down here for what they have done to their real estate prices by buying all the beachfront properties and the good locations in the BCS cities.

In some states adultry is still illegal. It's on the books as a law, but not enforced. Maybe marriage statistics would improve, divorce would go down, and broken homes would lessen if we enforced that law.
and while we are at it we could enforce the employment laws and fine the companies and people for tax evasion for hiring illegals... think of the revenue we'd swim in......
Many that don't use proper channels would not be approved and they know it. It's not cost. People don't break the law unless they are cheating and they know what and why when they do it. It's excuse making.
Do you get the idea?

The cost of paper work isn't the problem. The ability of the country to support the illegals is the problem. Does the country want the illegals. Granted the employers are getting a short term benefit, but the citizens that have to foot the bill takes it in the shorts.
What the source (country) has to do is install infrastructure that all can use to create wealth. The 1st world has done it so that they are lands of opportunity. They uses to do it in 3rd world countries, BUT the 3rd worlders choose to do a short sighted trick of nationalizing the assets. Short term the locals benefited, but long term less assets were installed. Lack of infrastructure meant less jobs in the future.
Just see what will happen long term in Venezuela.

chula is right on her staments but the issue is far more complex than that .
first at all yes the price is a problem for many even when many pay tousands to be able to cross . most of the time it is not their money but money they were able to get from someone else . many sell everything they have and then come to the states .
second the real reason of why they come is because they are not able to get ahead where they live . the real problem and solution is in helping develop the areas from which they come . however the price to come legally is still somehow related to this plus many other factors like the eccesive incentives which the American farmers receive from the goverment .
third the price would not matter a bit if the goverment still not recognized than they need to give more visas . believe me if the price was smaller to pay and they were given the chance to do it legally all who are honest would not come illegally . therefor the problem is not just the price but the number of visas .
note : deporting a single one of them would not help at all develop the areas from which they come from but would only worsten their situation and would make them come once more once they able to get more money . money which they would have to get from somone else once again and would never be able to pay from Mexico ( Mexico minimun wage is 10 times smaller than the USAs) .

That and making it a shorter process. Of course they would go for that. They dont come here illegally because they take pride in the title of "illegal alien", they would jump at the chance to change that status if they could.

Is not about the price of immigration. not all people that wants to immigrate qualify. but is our government system and Mexico corruption that produces illegal immigrants. i do not believe there is a simple answer for illegal immigration but one thing we can do is to never forget that we are humans and we should respect every person trying to do better without harming you.
