Two best video editing software are Roxio and Pinnacle. I have Roxi when it was Video Wave, but Pinnacle is just as good. Now you need to have a IEEE1394 cord to hook up your video camera to your computer. Radio Shack or any other computer stores sell them. Don't get the gold plated, not necessary. You should pay about $20 for the cord. For the video editing software it's about $100, but you could pick it up for less if it's on sale. Once you have the software, you download it on your computer. Then you hook up your video camera to your computer. And turn on the camera. Then you go to the video software on your computer, then you down load what's on the video tape. Doing this you have to read the instructions of the video editing software.

You mention that the camera has "a lot of film." You cannot input photofilm output into a computer directly. You need a device of some kind to convert the analog film into digital files. This is going to cost more than the project results justify, in all probability.

But if the video camera already uses a digital format, there are cables you can get that will permit connecting the camera to the computer. See a computer or camcorder store technician.
