My son has had a heart murmur since birth and is now 16 months old. At his latest checkup the murmur was still detected by the doctor. The doctor still says it's nothing to worry about but he also told us shortly after his birth that most newborn's outgrow their murmurs within a year. Should I be concerned and demand an exam by a specialist?

My daughter has a heart murmur that was detected when she was born. She went to a pediatric cardiologist and he said hers was very minor and wouldn't cause her any problems and would most likely go away. I was told to come back in two years which I just did and she still had it but it was barely there. You can go to a specialist, they do a heart ultrasound while you sit right there and the doctor will explain everything that he is seeing. If it would make you more comfortable that's what you should do, but generally kids grow out of it or it's insignificant. Actually, I do recommend that you see a specialist because the location of the murmur defines the severity of it. Being able to hear a murmur doesn't tell you where in the heart it is. If he hasn't had an echocardiogram I say take him to get one.

My daughter, now 3 1/2, was born with a heart murmur that was detected at birth. After taking her to a pediatric cardiologist at Texas Children's Hospital, it was diagnosed as VSD. She went every 3 months for X-rays and ultrasounds and it got smaller each time. I am happy to say that at her last checkup 3 months ago that it is completely gone. She was lucky. I have learned that it is more common than we think and most children outgrow it before kindgergarten. Make sure he is getting the best care possible. There is no way to put a price on your children.

My son is 3 and still has a slight murmur. We found out that he had one while he was around 18 months. We were told to see a specialist. After getting examined and having a follow up doctors app. so we could discuss the results. The doctor told us it was nothing to worry about. At my sons 3 yr check up, they told us that he still has a slight one, but it sounds like its coming from a different region of the heart? The doctor explained to me when my son's heart murmur was first discovered that they could hear it better when they listened to it on the front of his chest. Now they hear it better on when they put the stethoscope on his back.

I'm not too worried about it since he has gone to a specialist, his doctor and the specialist both say that my son's heart murmur isn't a serious one.
