they "hurt" but they're not unbearable. infact i personally don't even use the word hurt because i never really was in any immense pain. yeah you feel it but most of the time to me it feels good. i have my arms tattooed (shoulder to wrist), my legs (knee to ankle) and the entire upper part of my back as well as my fingers. like i said, i think they feel good, i look foward to getting inked, i find it relaxing. but everyone's different.

I thought I had a pretty normal tolerance for pain for a female... But after I got my tattoo I believe I am the biggest wimp.
But like everyone has said, it does depend on where it is, how big it is, how many colors, and how much fine detail.
I got Vincent Van Gogh's painting Starry Night on my inner leg above my ankle a bit. It is about 4'' x 4''. And I figured the leg would be an alright place. It isn't really near the ankle bone. But when he started doing the first line I was like... This hurts really bad and he just started. Mine has several colors, and a lot of the colors are layered, so it really hurt when he would go over a place he had already done.
The one thing that no one told me though is that the ink has alcohol in it... So it burns like butting alcohol over a wound when it is being done until about 15 minutes after it is done. And I had to have someone pick me up from the tattoo shop because I felt like I was high. I didn't know the whole thing about endorphins being released but they made me crazy. I kept crying... then laughing, then crying. Just make sure you are comfortable with the tattoo artist, and he is not a total asshole, because mine was and kept making fun of me.
I don't mean to scare you, but, tattoos hurt. I figured since so many people have them they can't be that bad. But I guess they aren't that bad because recently I have been trying to find a good tattoo artist to do my back. The pain doesn't last very long. And it really is worth it.

Yep, but how bad it hurts depends on the location of the tattoo, your personal response to pain and the artist doing the tattoo.

tattoos hurt most people BUT the pain is only temporary. my husband got his tattoo finished last night and he is already going back tomorrow to start his NEW tattoo. so obviously the pain is not too bad. i have sat for about three hours at a time. going back for more in a week or so.

Yes it goes under the skin so the ink will stay. Just have to have a high tolerance, and depends on how big the tattoo is.

A tattoo is basically a scar, colored with ink.
Getting a tattoo involves a series of needles, pushing ink into several layers of your skin.
Yeah, it can be painful.

Yes, it hurts but only for a while. Like everyone else said it does depend where in the body you want to get it. I got mine slightly above my breast and it hurt! It also hurt afterwards because I sleep on my stomach so I would irritate it while I slept. BUT either way you should be fine.

Well seriously NO, I got one on my lower back. Because i was expecting it to hurt so much, it didn't. I didnt even flinch. I'm not going to lie it burns a little but its totally bearable. If your that worried about it, before you go put some numbing cream on it! but you'll be fine with out it..
