Yes, he should have told you why he stopped you, but in a way he did by saying "I just want to ask you some questions." Maybe that was it, he just wanted to talk to you. Perhaps your car matched a description and after he stopped you he found you didn't so he left you. I don't know. You can always call the Police Department, ask to speak with a supervisor and inquire why you were stopped. They should find out and let you know.

Technically, they do not have to tell you why you were pulled over. The first time you are entitled to know-even if you are taken to jail is at the -arraignment.I am taking criminal procedure and judicial process right now.Even if you are pulled over for no reason it can not vilate the 4th amendment because it isn't covered. You can get pulled over for anything. If you are seized and frisked for weapons if the first violation and they need reasonable suspicion x 2. One for the stop and one for the search.

The police officer should have had reasonable suspicion to pull you over and out of courtsey, he should have told you why he was pulling you over. At my agency, as it is with many others, we are supposed to tell them that at teh beginning of the stop.
It really depends on what all he asked you, how long he had you stopped, and if you are positive he didnt tell you why he pulled you over and his attitude in my opinion. If it bothers you too much, it might be a good idea and contact the agency (be polite and level headed of course) and see if its typical of what happned to you. If it didn't bother you too much, I would just let it go.

He told you why. If you did not get into trouble and if he was an actuall cop then I would just forget about and be glad he didn't make up something for no reason.

He told you why--he just wanted to ask you some questions. You may not like the answer or even believe it but he did tell you why.

Police are only required to inform you of the charges against you when you are arrested. Otherwise, they don't have to tell you squat.

Maybe your car matched a descripton of a violent criminal, and why would he tip his hand to a potential threat?
