Ok, well im a guy who usually asks a girl out and makes all the first moves. So ya i think it would be a surprise to him, and would make the relationship that much stronger.

It all depends on the guy. Me personaly I like the girls to ask me so that I know that they like me so I don't make a fool of my self.But some guys like to aks the girl so that the girl doesn't
think that he is to shy to ask her out.If you really
like him then just ask him. If he likes you he will say yes. I hope this helps.

If "By themselves" you mean one-on-one, then absolutely. I do. If you mean ask them out in person personally, then it's tough, because its' sort of embarassing and frightening.
