What's the term for the symbol used on a military aircraft to tell which country it's from? For example: German planes had an iron cross on their wings, Americans had a blue star, and Canada had the maple leaf in a blue and white circle.

I believe the term is insignia which is also used for the identifying symbols on military uniforms.
