I've removed and re-downloaded the player many times...even went to Microsoft's support area and downloaded additional codecs. Could my email program be preventing the .wmv files I receive from playing? Any help would be greatly appreciated in resolving this issue.

This seems to happen with .wmv files that are sent by email as attachments. I've tried some of the other suggestions, but these have not resolved the issue. My computer came pre-loaded and does not have a start-up disc. Should I call the manufacturer and try to obtain one? Will that solve the problem?

Codec errors usually mean that you're missing some of the codecs required to play certain video files. Go here http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm
and download the k-lite codecs pack and install it. Make sure you read the readme file before install it.
