I have two cats. They are two and three year old males. They are VERY affectionate and follow me around everywhere. I am planning on adopting a female shih tzu puppy at the end of the month. I know it will take time for them to get used to the puppy, but will their affection for me continue? I don't want them to live in fear of the puppy. Can they co-exist and share my love? Will they continue to sit on my lap even when the puppy enters the room?

the animals will work out their own relationships. your cats are territorial and will let the puppy know it. their affection will continue as long as you continue yours it will just take a little time for them to adjust to sharing you with another animal.

I imagine that your cat is going to be so ticked off for awhile that you will not believe it. I hope he is neutered because he could start spraying because he will be so mad and upset. The puppy will be full of energy and bounce all over the place. He will not realize that the cat isn't ready to put up with such nonsense so expect the cat to give him hisses and some good swats. Make sure that both get a lot of attention and have someone hold each to cut down on the jealousy. It will take time but they should learn to co-exist. As the dog get larger make sure that he realizes that rough playing with the cat is not permitted. Best of luck.

well,I HAVE TWO CATS and if one is sitting in my lap and my dog jumps in chair the cat leaves fast. one day I WENT TO SLEEP an woke up the cat was laying on my feet and the dog beside me,by it being a puppy and being raised with cats may help,I've had some pups and cats play together; and some that never like each other; .really would probley be better if you was getting a kitten instead if you want your cats to always be calm and not jumpy.good luck

Don't take the advice of the poster hoping your cats are declawed. If your cats will attack the puppy, declawing will only mean they will bite the puppy (or any other living being) more than they would scratch him since they will be even more frightened being deprived of their main means of defense/attack.

I think analogies are dumb but think of a paranoid country with no tanks, no soldiers, no airplanes but only nuclear missiles. That's how your declawed kitten will become.

It's the cats' territory not the puppy's. They will eventually act as they did with you and will play with the pup or tolerate it. All will work out. Give it a month. Good luck.

you never can tell untill you introduce them to eachother. i hope that your cats are declawed though. i had 3 cats, all very loving, and brought home a chihuahua puppy. they would all run from it at first, then would stratch at him. they didnt like him at all, and never did get used to him, i had to give to of my cats to my brother. usually though, animals get used to eachother and after a while, dont even see a difference. it may take time though. i doubt they will ever stop loving you, they just may be leary of the puppy for a while.

There's no way for us to know. That's one of the great things about cats - they are unpredictable.
