I don't know the textbook definition, but here's a description of intensive agriculture that I see when I look out the window of my living room (moscow, idaho): cultivation of crops in a way that maximizes crop yield by using technologies such as agro-chemicals (fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides, & herbicides), hybrid plants, tilling, and sometimes, irrigation. Crops are grown every year, and sometimes more than one crop per year. Requires gigantic tractors and harvesters, and relies heavily on products derived from oil - basically, energy from oil is converted in to crops.
