YOu are spot on on this issue. I get this too and I hate it. It's very rude of them. As if they are so busy. I don't believe it. What you did ie tit for tat is good. Show them how it feels.

People are busy, and sometimes they don't respond right away. I know that I'm busy sometimes and don't always call my friends or write to them. But it doesn't mean that I don't care. I would hope that my friends know that I care about them despite the fact that I don't write sometimes, and I like to give them the benefit of the doubt, too.
Other answerers are right too: some people just don't do e-mail much as a form of communication, so they aren't very proficient at checking it every day and using it regularly. Maybe it would be better to use the phone or even snail mail to keep in touch with these people.

I totally understand! I think it is rude too. After all, they GAVE you there e-mail addy because they wanted to keep in touch with you right? I know people are busy and have lots to do, also it's true some may not log on every day, but really how long does it take? Can you imagine what it would have been like to deal with people like that when there was only snail mail?!

Hmmm...this really hits a spot with me. I'll forget for a long time to check my e-mail, as I don't really do that much correspondance. But I am also irritated by people who don't respond within a week or so. If it's someone with a business relationship, that e-mail should definitely be responded to ASAP. For friends, I'd let it slide.

My opinion is that, as with all etiquette, a timely response of some kind is right. Even if someone doesn't have time write some long response he/she could send a quick, "Hi, Susie. I got your e.mail and will write back when as soon as I can."
It is true not everyone checks their e.mail daily, but if you know someone who doesn't then don't send them any e.mails at all. These people are not in an "e.mail mode", so leave them off as potential recipients of e.mail.

Not everyone logs on to their computer everyday, or is interested in reading/responding to e-mail.
