Are you referring to "pick up your cross and follow me?" -Jesus said this when he was still walking the earth, before His death and resurrection. But He means to give up your sin and follow Him- to let go of the things of the world and follow Him. To Trust Him.

Luke 9:23
Then he said to them all: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.

Luke 14:27
And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.

Why do believers have to take up their cross? As a Christian, I should deny myself of what "I" want to do "MY" sinful pleasures, and instead take up my cross, or follow God's will. As John Wesley puts it:

"...but if any will be a Christian...let him in all things deny his own will, however pleasing, and do the will of God, however painful..."

The will of God, though so much better, does seem hard when I want to get want I want. Deny myself, and follow God. Do I do that all the time? No. That is why I look to follow after Christ Jesus, and call on Him for help. Not my will, but God's will be done. God bless!

Jesus said in the bible that those who wish to follow me must take up their cross. We all have our own burdens to bear and life isn't easy. If you wish to be a Christian and follow Jesus you face obstacles because the Christian lifestyle is not one that is easy to live. The work that we do in this life helps us to live an amazing eternity with Jesus. As well as you face ridicule, which is often seen on this website, for your Christian beliefs. Which by the way is funny to me that non Christians complain that Christians say bad stuff about them and criticize their lifestyle, but so many more times on this site I see the non-Christians making fun of the Christians, ironic.

The cross represents your own sins and your old life. By becoming a recipient of salvation, you crucify your old sin nature and your old way of doing things to become reborn with a clean slate and a new life in Jesus Christ.

The cross is symbolic of your old ways and beliefs and it is necessary for you to give them up to receive salvation and a new eternal life. You have to carry that cross because the decision to follow God and accept salvation and a new life is yours and yours alone.

the cross is a place where those who would do harm are put so they can do no more harm.

Jesus said to deny yourself and carry your cross. In other words, don't judge who you are by your flesh and what it does, hang your flesh on a cross and follow Jesus and be free. Don't give the flesh the glory or the advantage, know who you are and who others are, not by what they look like or do, but by who God said you and others are, his offspring. Once you know who you and others are, then you hang your flesh on a cross and you can not do harm to others and others can not do harm to you (maybe your flesh, but not to you, you are spirit).

Luke 9:23 Then he said to the crowd "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must put aside your selfish ambition, shoulder your cross daily and follow me."
Christians follow their Lord by imitating his life and obeying his commands. To shoulder one's cross meant to carry one's own cross to the place of crucifixion. Many Galilieans had been killed that way by the Romans. Applied to the disciples, it meant to identify completely with Christ's message, even if it meant death. We must deny our selfish desires to use our time and money our own way and to choose our own direction in life without regard to Christ. Following Christ in this life may be costly but in the long run, it is well worth the pain and effort.

It's not like a literal cross made of wood for Romans to kill me on or anything like that. It's just life, life is hard for everyone...we each have our own difficulties and trials and he just wants us to bear them well, and still continue to live and thrive even in the midst of them. - good advice for anyone of any faith.

These messengers have We exalted some of them above others; among them there are those to whom Allah spoke; and some of them He exalted in degrees of rank. And We gave Jesus, son of Mary, clear proofs and strengthened him with the spirit of holiness. And if Allah had so willed, those that came after them would not have fought with one another after clear Signs had come to them; but they did disagree. Of them were some who believed, and of them were some who disbelieved. And if Allah had so willed, they would not have fought with one another; but Allah does what He desires.
