Those "pre-approved" things appear to be only just mail. Don't fall for it. Pre-approved credit cards are the "you're almost a winner"/Publisher's-Clearing-House-crap of this decade.

They're trying to hook you in to make you likely to apply. If you read the fine print, it says you still need to be approved once your credit is checked and the pre-approval is only pre-approved to apply! The biggest problem is that applying for lots of cards lowers your credit score. The more inquiries appear on your credit, the lower the number goes! So don't apply to very many since you're hurting your credit, not helping. Besides, sometimes it's best not to have the temptation of the credit card.

Ever heard of Crown Jewelers? It's a great company that will give you a small credit line and report to all three (3) credit bureaus to help you build your credit.

They are well known for giving people a start without the normal credit checks and all that stuff.

Make sure you read the letter very carefully. I get these all the time, and every one says something to the fact that they can relinquish the offer at any time based on your financial status and credit history.

Because you are not really pre approved. They just want that up front fee of nine dollars or a little more, only never to return it to you. Just think how much money they are making off of that scam.

I imagine they do it because they'll get more people to appy by telling them they are pre-approved, versus just sending a mailing asking you to apply.
What I've always found rather "stupid" is that I've gotten pre-approved mailings that used my nickname or my maiden name (or both). That person doensn't even legally exist, and yet is "pre-approved" for credit...

They just send them to any name they have, they don't even check obvious factors like age! My five year old niece regularly receives them, I even received one addressed to my dog once!
