You apparently were "straying" too much from what the Church wanted you to say. Existential would mean be caught up in existence but I tend to think that's a pretty good position to take when counseling.
Try not to take it too hard. Just know that, in this case, the church was being existential by refusing to hear/see anything that didn't match what they wanted.

A position of counseling should not be considered a "right" but should be held sacred - these are peoples lives you are dealing with. In my opinion, a church body who cares about its people cannot be too careful regarding who they put in a position of such sensitivity. That person can mistakenly teach lies or false teaching that can cause great pain and destruction for years in the subject and should be of only the most careful disposition and professional character whether paid or unpaid. This person must never be just a well meaning emotional tear jerker.
Do you behave professionally? What have you done to improve yourself and increase your knowledge and wisdom and who have you scoped out to help you when you are over your head. If you have not done all of these things I must say that you have no business in counseling. Certainly I hope that in not the case. However, I don't consider posting your problem on Yahoo as an professional thing. How could anyone here possibly know the facts of your situation and be part of the solution. It sounds to me like it is possible that you are looking for people to side with you and tell you what you want to hear.

First of all, give yourself a pat on the back for your willingness to help others.
Many times, in positions such as these, you are expected to give very clear, concrete advice, such as referrals to community resources. My guess is that you were too theoretical instead of being concrete and practical.
Do not take this too hard. Many people would not have reached out in the first place. You sound like a kind and caring person.

It could have meant you were over simplifying the situations people were in. If you believed that people were completely in control of their situations and were not products of their environment then I might have made the same judgment on your ability to be counseling. A good councilor will have a good sense of empathy and be good at understanding what coping tools someone may or may not have to deal with various situations.

Dear Madame,
You depress me.
Need I say more?
That's okay, when I die, I'll go to a better place. Too bad you can't say the same. Read Ernest Hemmingway. I bet you'll relate well.

It just says that the church is closed minded and wants only their doctrine spoke of.
