Undoubtedly it can.
Examples of horrors from the past and present practice of religion can turn people away in disgust.
Whether it should is a rather more subtle question: are the faults of religion are inherent in the concept, or simply due to religious groups being made up of human beings?
There is no perfect church, but then there isn't a perfect political party or secular institution either.

In Islam, religion and secularity go together. Islam fits into our religious and secular life.

Too many Christians fail to realize that they live in and participate in a
secular world. Certainly this is true in America & Europe.
Likewise many do not understand that Christianity, Judaism and Islam are
Humanistic. If one has concern for the welfare of their fellow man, they are
a Humanist.
Unlike a disease however they are not catching but must be willfully indulged in.
To my way of thinking neither is harmful to Christians.

fundamentalism made me secular, then being secular made me a post-modern evangelical. it's no fun being out in the cold when there's a beautiful fire going in the living room.
