I think the parents should have just given the gifts to a homeless shelter. the kids obviously need some major discipline but i think involving the police is overkill

I had a lot of problems like that growing up, sans the shoplifting, but underneath the behavioral problems there are other problems as well, like being diagnosed as having Asperger's Syndrome. I feel bad for the kid because I know there are further underlying issues at hand here, and what I see is a bad issue becoming worse. "Tough Love" may work for some kids, but for others, specifically those with psychological or neurological conditions, it can actually increase the possibility of the child becoming more psychologically damaged.
The mother needs to find a good doctor, someone who cares about the patient, and have him tested. Otherwise, her fear may come true.

Given that the GREAT grandmother is only 63 and the mother was 15 when she had him, and there doesn't appear to be any adult males around, I'm not surprised that the kid did what he was told not to do. I'm sure he's been doing that since he was a toddler. I'm also sure that this isn't the first time this kid has been on the wrong side of the handcuffs and it sure doesn't sound like it will be the last, either.

I think the mother is being far too lenient on this child. Why is she buying him expensive things when he is obviously over-spoiled as it is? He gets in trouble and doesn't care; as she said it didn't even phase him when the police came to the door! I can see this type of rebellious nature as a phase a teenager goes through, but in a 12 year-old? I think she should take the system back to the store and get her money back, and cancel his Christmas this year, bu I know she won't, she'll just hope someone else can fix her son's problems for her, that someone being the criminal justice system. She needs to take her parenting into her own hands (and I mean that in a literal sense, I don't understand why children aren't spanked anymore, America is oversensitive). Sorry for rambling/ranting, just I think its disgusting when America is taking tolerance to such a level that parents tolerate all the crap their kids give them without fighting back and let the kids just run everything.

This is an unfortuante reminder of being a single parent with a child that knows no bounds. As the article stated, the mother plans on having the child placed in the "system" at the court date. It is not uncommon to respond to a "I need a dad" call where a child has done something and the mother needs the police to discipline the child.

The story tells itself, doesn't it? The child has severe behaviour problems and the mother feels that the courts may be able to provide some help for her son.

I have charged kids for stealing a couple of cigarettes from their mother's purse. That it itself also seems silly, but this mother had told me that the child had been stealing for a long time and she had tried all sorts of discipline methods with no avail. The courts can order counselling and probation that helps the parents control the child.

It breaks parent's hearts to charge their kids but sometimes they get to the end of their ropes and feel they have no other choice.

Unreal. If the only thing you can do is call police & have a 12 yr old handcuffed-you're not much of a parent. It is a failure as a parent to call police without extreme circumstances. The mother is 27-with a 12 year old. And Grandma(she must be a sweetie) calling the shots after she did a lousy job raising her daughter...

I hope that woman has to reimburse the municipality for the costs involved, it's bad enough the police have to babysit kids out in public, they shouldn't have to do the parent's job at home. they usually get p.o.'d when they have to arrest someone, haul them to jail, and then the person drops the charges.
