Juist wanted to thank everyone for advice on getting my cat Fonzie back from the crazy cat lady who catknapped him. I'm taking him to get micro chipped in the morning. Does it hurt him and will I be able to feel the chip under his skin?

good on you, it will hurt for a split second as it goes in, it is about the size of a grain of rice, therefore the needle is larger than normal vaccine needles, but it will be worth it, that way no one can take him off you. Usually you cannot feel it under the skin depends on thickness of skin and fur.

That's a great thing to do. It will not hurt that much, kinda like another vaccine but in bewtween the shoulder blades. You, nor your cat will even know its there. its actually only about 1/2 inch long and about this thick. (--) That's also the scary thing because if your cat gets out of the house and someone takes him to a shelter or a vet office, there is NO guarantee you will get your pet back. Volunteer shelters such as SPCA an humane shelters cannot afford the scanner to read the chip. Your pet could still be adopted out to someone else or even euthanized without knowing the chip was even there. Yes, some vets do have the scanner and others don't. So it really all relies on where your pet ends up if it gets out of the house. yes, there is more of a chance of you receiving your pet back if it has the chip, but it all depends on the location it goes to.

LOL - yes - you can be micro-chipped if you wish. You wouldn't even need anesthesia, it's so fast. Of course, that's just for an ID chip; a tracking chip is a bit larger, so subcutaneous injection might require a local injection of anesthetic. Being Jewish, I don't believe there's any "mark of the beast." I'm not sure if I'd want to be microchipped, but you pose an interesting idea for patients with illnesses like Alzheimers, who "wander" from time to time. I would certainly think that they could be useful for children, too, providing that they have the option to remove the chip when they're older (not necessarily even adult, yet). I can see where it would be useful for keeping track of convicted felons as well, especially those who are restricted to certain areas, or who are not supposed to be in a particular place (like sex offenders near schools). It would take a lot of work to get it right so that people's rights wouldn't be infringed upon, but I think there are some very good potential uses.

I have one cat from a shelter, she was micro chipped (over two years ago) before I took her home, as per shelter's rules. Since then, she will not let you handle her around the back of neck/ shoulder blades. Also she runs and hides if you bring a carrier near her. This chip was obviously a bad experience for her so I do not personally recommend it.

It will not hurt him. It's inside an injection and the tuft of skin behind the neck is lifted and it is then injected into the fatty layers. You shouldn't be able to feel it. After injected it, the vet will run a scanner across the area to make sure it took and that it's working properly. you'll feel much better once you have it done! I just had my puppy done Monday and both of my cats are chipped as well.

I had my dog done. They took a need and went down in between her shoulder blades and she never felt a thing.I have felt around for it and I can't feel it either. My vet said it is about 3 to 4 inches deep in between the shoulder blades.I think you are making a good decision, some kind of id is better than none.Good luck

It won't hurt him! The chip is placed between the shoulder places where there is plenty of extra skin (the "scruff" of the neck).

You won't be able to feel it, but if you ever doubt it's there, just have them scan and you'll here it beep.

I HEARD THE ONLY TIME THE MICRO CHIP WORKS IS IF THE PEOPLE OR PERSONS WHO FIND THE ANIMAL TAKE HIM/HER TO THE VET TO SEE IF IT IS CHIPPED. DON'T KNOW IF THATS TRUE BUT, JUST LETTING YOU KNOW.
BUT IT IS ALWAYS A GREAT IDEA AND REASONABLY INEXPENSIVE.

The needle is pretty large, but it is over quick. I do all my puppies before they go to new homes and they cry for a second, but then its all over. You should not be able to feel it.
