The word Pakistan was created in 1933 by Rahmat Ali Chaudhry, a Cambridge law student, to refer to the independence movement that existed prior to the British decolonisation project of ex-London law students. It derives from the Urdu words for "pure country". However, the abbreviation Paki acquired offensive connotations in the 1960s when used by British tabloids to refer to decolonisational subjects in a derogotary and racist manner. In modern British usage "Paki" is typically used in a derogatory way as a label for all South Asians, including Indians and Bangladeshis. In recent times there has been a trend by second- and third-generation British Pakistanis to reclaim the word, such as in the name of the clothing company PAK1 or the independent refugee television news agency paki.tv.

The racist connotations may be confined only to the UK. In Australia, the Pakistani cricket team are commonly referred to as the Pakis, just as the West Indians are known as the Windies.

It doesn't matter why people get offended by use of a shortened version of their nationality name; they do so don't cause offence if you can avoid it. All too often, "Paki" is used as a patronising label for a wide range of Asian people, many of whom don't come from Pakistan. It's a generational thing - people of my parents' generation (ages 40 - 60+) still refer to a Chinese meal as a "chinky". But people of my children's generation (primary school age) just don't do it 'cos they know better!

I don't get offended if someone calls me a 'Brit' but if they call ed me a f*c*i*g Brit, then I'd be offended.

It may be that most of us Brits can't say Paki without putting f*c*i*g in front of it. We also can't say Catholic, Jew, American, French or Welsh without putting the F- word in front of it. Legal or not 95% of Britions are racially predudiced, mostly because of the predudicial rantings of our alien guests noisy minority.

I don't quite understand why, either.... it's about the same as calling the Scottish "Scots" or "Scotties" to me, or the British "Brits", but the Pakistani people seem to find it offensive, so I just don't use the word.

I get you, but for years the term 'Paki' has been used as a racial slur by some so invariably the word has become offensive all round. You try making the word ****** inoffensive and you have earned your right to use 'Paki.'
