The fall season, usually called autumn, officially begins on September 21st. This is the time when the weather transitions from being in the high 80s and 90s to around the lower 70s and 60s. At least that's how it is here in New England. You can tell when it really gets into the fall season when the leaves of the trees start to change color. The fall season usually lasts until the end of November, but officially ends by December 20th.

In North America the Sept.,- Dec. Season is known as the fall or Autumn season; in South America I think it is the April-June Season that is known as the fall or Autumn season.

North of the Equator

Autumnal Equinox
On or around September 21st, the Fall Equinox marks the first day of fall. Like its spring counterpart, the Fall Equinox represents another day of the year when day and night last almost exactly the same amount of time.

Maybe Autumn is called "fall" because that is when many of the trees' leaves fall?

Autumn because the leaves are falling: Fall. This season is very short in America, it only lasts from 10 days to about a month and suddenly it is full blown freezing winter. Brrrrr!

Autumn. It used to be 'fall' in British English too once upon a time, until we adopted the French word.
