You may need to get OCR (optical character recognition) software for the scanner. Most new scanners come with it and do a fair job. Other 3rd party software can do much better, but it depends on the copy you're scanning. It'll take the document and convert it to text (MS Word, test, etc.)

Make sure you get some OCR software (Optical Character Recognition) - I recommend ABBYY fine reader I think it is on V8 or 9 - but the good thing is it keeps the document Exactly as it was typed - even if there are any graphics or tables - it keeps the formatting. It can then import in to MS Word or equivalent so that changes and edits can take place.

Another on the market that friends of mine have are Omni Page Pro - they use V12 and find it good.

The chance is that if you bought your scanner recently then there may be some on the discs that came with it so have a browse through the disc and see - mine came with Abbyy Fine reader sprint v6

Hope this helps a little.

if they are typed documents sucjh as a printed book. you should have no problem. get a HP scanner with software suite such as th HP Scanjet4850.
now once installed you can use the scanner to scan to a range of different file types including .doc format for microssoft word for example. you can save to PDF editable format. you can save your file as a picture in a range of formats.
if you already have a scanner as you say then get yourself OCR software (the most recent release you can get) several good OCR packages available. you may even be able to download a copy from the manufacturers website of your scanner.
or see somwhere like www.softpedia.com and see if there is anything listed on there.

If your scanner doesn't have a way to save them in a document format, you will need to find a software that will help you (specially for your scanner) maybe you can find it on the manufacturers web page.

as long as you have a scanner, you can do anything, with the scanner that is.
