I am assuming you are talking about the upconverting DVD players that cost around $100 and not a BluRay DVD player that costs $1000. I personally think the upconverting DVD players are marketing hype. On paper, it sounds great. Wow, convert a 480p dvd movie into high definition. In reality, this just doesn't work that well because you are nearly doubling the resolution artificially.

I would recommend to save your money. Stick with a 480p progressive DVD player and connect it to your HDTV via component video cables. If you already have a progressive DVD player, I would not waste your time and money to upgrade to the upconverting dvd players. Nor would I waste $1000 on buying an High def DVD player like HD-DVD or BluRay. Great quality with the high def DVD players, but way too expensive.

Yes they work, but tecnically the dvd movie would have to be made in HD for a true HD quality picture. The dvd player just changes how the video is broadcast to the tv to make it seem HD.

Techman20 hit the nail on the head. He did omit one thing however regarding HD and blue-ray. Neither has been established as a standard so each is competing for market share. I would suggest you just save your money and wait until the standard is established then buy one.
