Hydraulics work on the principal of a sealed chamber being filled by a pump, with fluid to achieve movement. There is a set amount of fluid that is recycled within the system. Ex. hydraulic jack...every pump forces fluid from storage to piston, when valve is re-opened, it flows back to storage. Constant recycle.


Pneumatics rely on a constant source of air pressure delivered via compressor. In order for pneumatics to work, air is cycled thru the equipment, then exhausted. New air is required for each cycle of the machine, ex. Pneumatic nail gun. Each nail is sent via a new store of air pressure.

Hydraulics uses liquids and pneumatics use gasses. Hydraulics are better suited for high pressure applications. However the liquid or gas must be chosen carefully to work properly. Take water for example, it can promote rust, freeze when cold, and boil at low temps. Simlar problems will accure with the wrong gas.

pneumatic tend to be more tolerant of failure, with a hydaulic system a break in the line can result in a total loss of pressure, with pneumatic it's possible the pump can compensate and the system can keep functioning

both can be used to do work... i.e. a piston in a cylinder as in a car lift or a jack. (Force = pressure x area and Work = force x distance)

Hydralics uses a fluid (liquid) while pneumatics uses air.

Hydraulics handle more power, better.
