This is my least favorite side effect of antidepressants. My guess is, it's the Effexor and there is not much you can do about it. The only thing they can really try to do to counter it is add Wellbutrin....but you're already taking that (and it never worked to stop the sexual side effects for me either.)

If your depression is stablized and has been for a while, you can talk to your doctor about weaning off of the Effexor perhaps. You will still have the Wellbutrin and Lamictal (although it is not an antidepressant, research has shown it does seem to have antidepressant effects) to help with depression and the sexual problems should go away. But, if you are going to go that route, do not stop the Effexor cold turkey. Have your doctor help you slowly wean off. The withdrawal side effects from that particular med are seriously unpleasant...they can mostly be avoided by going off gradually.

Unfortunately it is as common a problem as it is frustrating. For me, Effexor and Lexapro had the most significant sexual side effects, followed closely by Zoloft and Celexa. It drives me crazy, because they are effective for depression for me. And like you, I took them (each in turn) with other medications (including Wellbutrin, which I have been on for about 8 years and don't have any problems with.) The good thing is, the problem went away when I discontinued the medication...took a little while to get back to normal, but it does happen.

If you are still fighting a major depressive episode though, you should seriously consider staying on the medication and letting it do it's job...and dealing with the frustration.

The one other thing you can try is being sexual (for lack of a better way to word it) shortly before you take your daily dose....theoretically that can help because there is a lower concentration of medication in your system at that time, I think. Or experiment with different times of day...see if any time seems more successful than others for you. This may help to a degree, but it won't solve the problem.

I can't wait until they come up with newer meds without this side effect!

poetgirl gave a great and thorough answer. i would add that i have heard of people smoking marijuana to help with sexual problems. i don't condone illegal activities but that's what I've heard.

also, think about adding aerobic activity to your daily life, if you not already.

i'm currently weaning off of effexor. i feel better on each lower dose. i'm a firm believer that these meds can actually exacerbate depression. but, that's a whole different conversation.

i pray that you get better.

i just re-read the meds you are currently taking and if it were me, i would start coming off of it all. but that's just me.
