My cousin is leaving my family her cottage while she goes away for a year, my mom was thinking of getting a small dog but because my cousin was once almost attacked by a bear(i am not joking she has 64 acres of forest!) she wants to get a protective dog, does anyone know a loving but protective dog that's not any bigger then a german shepherd because we don't have enough room at our house
Thanx

Rhodesian Ridge backs are about the same size as a German shepherds. These dogs where used to hunt and also protect early English settlers in Africa from Lions. That's what they were bred to do-hunt lions.

Any dog you get will have to be trained to protect. Even so, if a naturally protective dog (German Shepherd, Rottie, etc.) were faced with a bear, the bear would win unless the dog had been trained specifically how to ward off a bear.
However, if you'd just like to slow down an impending bear attack, pretty much any dog will do and will bark his head off while you go get the rifle.
A German Shepherd would do nicely unless you want to try and find a Finnish Karelian Bear Dog (see link below)

Any type of terrier is a very loyal and protective dog...even the pit bull. German Shepherd's are bigger than the pitts too. Check out different breeds at www.akc.com or www.ukc.com - I guarantee there'll be quite a few listed that you've never even heard of before. What happens to the dog after the year is up?

German Shepherds, Rottweilers (not all get huge), Pitbulls, and Chow's are all good protective dogs but irregardless of the dog, they won't win against a bear. Sorry. I can see her wanting protection and a dog to alert her but when it comes to a bear, I'd be shocked if any dog won. Against just about anything else, yes. I would reccomend a German Shepherd because they're not only protective but also very loving dogs.

Well your other answers aren't to bad a rott. requires alot of time and training and to be part of the family. They WILL take over your household unless you Continuously tell them who is boss.[have showed and raised them for years.] I think you would be better with a German Shepard. they are strong dogs, loyal , and protective without all the other[easier to deal with]. NOT A PIT BULL FOR WHAT YOUR LOOKING FOR!! GERMAN SHEPARD BEST BET

Protection from bears means Pits or Rots. I would contact a rescue center and ask this question. It's a tough one! I have 2 teacup poodlez and they can put a scare into anybody if they don't like you.

My dog is a mutt- Chow, Husky, and German Shepard. In my opinion, "loving" depends on it's training and personality.

your best choice, in my opinion is a rottweiler or a pittbull. both are very strong and very loyal to thier owners. most are even willing to die for them. both have good temeperament and are also good comapanions.
