Mononucleosis is caused by the Epstein-Barr-Virus (EBV). The virus infects the Lymphocytes mostly the nucleus which causes the cell to swell, and makes the cell to look like Monocytes (another type of white blood cell). So everyone else will tell you how you can get it and what happens when you do...

I got mono at age 22 after contracting strep throat. I got strep throat after almost drowning at a park, one of those six flags type water parks. I swallowed tons of water and I honestly believe that's where I got it, because I was sick a couple days later and I was in a good relationship, not getting it on with the hanky panky.
I have heard you aren't supposed to donate blood again after you've had mono in a lifetime...I'd like to know if that's true, if anyone knows.
Mono was so horrible. It made me so tired that I had to stop and take a rest when I was walking from my bed to the couch. It lasted forever, I'm surprised I didn't lose my job. I was out of work for about 3 weeks, maybe doing a half day here and there.
The lymph nodes in my stomach inflated so huge I had what felt like abdominal cramps all day long, every time I moved. All of my lymph nodes swelled, but those were the painful ones. And of course I had all the symptoms of strep throat (yuck!) on top of it.
I know someone who's had it twice, but the second time wasn't as bad as the first.

mono is a disease similar to a cold.
You will get sore throat and possibly a bit of swelling in most cases.
Its kinda like the chicken pox, most people get it as kids, and it doesnt come back. But some people don't get it until their teen years, at which point its alot worse for you.

You can get it from kissing. But other sicknesses can lead to mono.
