Go to start, then run and type msconfig in the box that comes up. A window will appear, in that window click the tab that says startup, and uncheck all things that don't need to start when your computer starts.

Get a free ram optimizer, defrag your drive(s), uninstall apps and remove files you don't need, and you could could also use the free app called FreshUI (just type it in a internet search to find it) to make adjustments to all sorts of properties. Just make sure you create a system restore point (if you're using XP) before using it.
