She is now able to jump up to it from the floor. My concern is that I have the new style stoves with the burners under the surface. The cook top stays hot for a while after using it. I don't want her to get burned. I have tried squirting her and putting her in her crate after she does this, but she won't stop.

Yeah, the problem with cats is that they know that if you're not there, they can get away with it. I have to respect their cleverness, but it's also a pain in the butt. I was having the same problem with my cat, until the day she jumped on the stove when it was on...she stopped doing it for a while after that! But she started doing it again, so a couple techniques I've tried that really work are either:

1. Trying putting an uncomfortable surface on top of the stove while you're not using it, like those black door mats with the spikes on top or something that can make a lot of noise. That usually works

2. Or buy a "skat cat" --or spelled something like that. It's a motion senser that emits a high pitched noise that you can't hear when a cat jumps up on the surface its on. That works too.

Or if all else fails they may have to learn the hard way unfortunately! Good luck!

I have the same problem with our kitten. We've been training her to stay off the counters, but that isn't always effective. The other day, she tried to jump into the oven (it wasn't hot, just warm, but still, for a second, my heart stopped). She also tries to get into the dish washer.

I have a squirt bottle, but I don't think she's learning that No means No, and not Just So Long As I'm Not Looking.

I know this sounds mean, but it's not really hard to learn not to touch a stove if it happens to be hot.
Cats have great reaction times. When she finds out it's hot once, she'll stay away forever, and she won't do any permanent damage to herself before she jumps off. Turn the stove on, so that you can feel the heat with your hand, and put her next to it, on the counter. If she leans over the stove to investigate it, she'll notice the heat, and if she doesn't get the idea, she'll figure it out the hard way.
Just don't have any glass vases resting nearby.

You can put pepper on top of your stove when it's not in use. It's annoying to clean up but it will keep her off of it and you'll only have to do it for a while before she learns. And keep saying "no" and squirting her with water or shaking a soda can filled with pennies when she does do it. It takes some time, but she will learn. Reward her for staying on the ground!

Get a squirt gun or bottle.
Every time she jumps up, squirt her with water.
Typically, a cat will not equate the squirt from the owner, but some supernatural force that does not want a cat on said item.

You can try cat repellant, or a cat repellant plant, such as Coleus canina (Scardy Cat), or other herbs that they dont like - pick some up at any garden store. If she still doesnt get it, try saying No! loudly and clap your hands...cats really do know the word no...

But for one really stubborn cat, i simply let him jump on the counter and approach and sniff the stove. He sniffed it from a distance and totally didnt like it (he squinted his eyes and made and awful face) and after that always went around it on the counter...cats usually dont like the smell of smoke or flames and go out of their way to avoid them. I noticed that he always avoided my candles and incense too.

I have also noticed that after I get my cats fixed they calm down a bit and a lot do less jumping.

When our cats were kittens the only way they learned to stay of a gas stove is when they stepped near the pilot. They yelped but they never went back on it. We checked to make sure they werent hurt but sometimes that is the only way to do it. You can do the spray bottle but sometimes they do connect spray to owner.

try the "stay off pet alarm" at target.com. I understand that it is on sale right now around $20.00 with free shipping.

It makes a loud noise when it senses a pet jumping up on a counter, etc. Give it a try :)

I love it.
