It depends on yr target ;if yr goal is to really learn Italian then you must definitively come here and attend the different courses of Italian for foreigners that really a lot of private schools are holding. The best are located in Florence and in Perugia (in case of real interest pls contact me to my Yahoo email and I'll pass you a few links).
If you've in yr mind to learn instead just something of our language I think any mean could be ok but not Internet or recorded lessons. Italian is a very difficult language, with hard constructions and a lot of exceptions, and therefore must be teached by somebody who knows it perfectly, better if mother tongue.Believe it or not besides Italian I've studied other 3 languages and the most difficulties I've met just with Italian...!!

I recognise a little bit of Spanish and lately heard a couple of distinctive men and women speakin Italian in entrance of me (it was once being translated to English for me) and whilst there have been a few similarities, there have been a LOT of diffrences, I very nearly couldn' understad a phrase of it although I knew that there have been phrases that seemed like Spanish phrases (even though that might were the ranslation instead than the language itself). I consider it's simpler to decide on one up if you recognize the opposite however I consider you could do good with an Italian phrasebook
