I am a 53 yr old woman who has chronic dry eyes...drops over the counter have not worked....I was told that Omega 3 tabs work....does anyone have any advice...My eye Dr. mentioned steriods....I do not want to go there...please help.

There are several possible options for you. It depends on the cause of your dry eyes. A newer treatment that seems really promising is a testosterone cream. Dr. Connor at Southern College of Optometry is who you should contact if interested or ask your optometrist to try to contact him.
Why don't you want to try steroids? If it is an option that may be helpful, I feel you should give it a shot.

It is very common that as we get older that our eyes get drier. Also some BP medications and other medications can increase the dryness in your eyes. I usually start patients off with OTC rewetting drops like systane. If that doesn't help I move to punctal plugs to help keep your tears on the eyes more. I also usually try restasis ( prescription for dry eye) for very dry eyes, the draw back is that it stings and takes a min. 3 months to have an effect. I have seen it help people. Steroid drops are also a viable option. It has been shown that some dryness is from inflammation which steroid drops can help with. You do not use them for a long time, but to knockdown the inflammation and switch to something else. I hope this helps.

i have the same problem and i work for an eye dr and i had tear duct plugs put in it helps so much but yes fish oil flax seed oil omega 3 fatty acids work you can always try restasis drops but it takes about 6 wks to see any diff so call dr and ask about plugs hope this helps you can email me if any more questions tona32177@yahoo.com
