How about a pet sitter? That way you don't have to worry about exposing your dog to contagious diseases, or it escaping from the boarding kennel and not being able to find its way home. It will also be less stressed in its usual environment. It costs about the same as boarding, and most reputable agencies will have a meeting with you and your dog beforehand for the benefit of all involved.

If you do want to use a boarding kennel, absolutely make sure you visit it unexpectedly and do so in good time before you go away, so that you can make other plans if it is unsuitable. You would be amazed at some of the conditions people will charge you to keep their animals in. Look at the health of the animals there, the cleanliness of the accomodation, the security of the facility and the exercise space. Also, make sure that anyone you trust to watch your animals is insured, and give them all your vet's contact details in case of emergency.

Good luck!
