Matthew 22 tells us:

34 But when the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35 Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying, 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?”
37 Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.”

Peace.

Mat 22:37 Yahshua said unto him, Thou shalt love Yahweh your Father with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

Mat 22:38 This is the first and great commandment.

Mat 22:39 And the second [is] like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Mat 22:40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Please note that these two are not part of the 10 commandments. Yahsshua was quoting from the Torah, letting you know that the 613 Laws of Yahweh are binding and forever.

Jesus specifically says, "love the Lord your God with all your heart, all you mind, all your strength, and love your neighbor as yourself. In these all of the law and the prophets are summed up." (my paraphrase from the NASB) He calls the first part the greatest commandment and the second like it.

When I was a kid they taught us they were in order of importance. Meaning the first commandment was by definition the most important.

I don't believe in that anymore, but this isn't a snide comment. That's just what Seventh Day Adventists believe.

In Mark's gospel, according to Jesus the greatest commandment is "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength." The second is "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."
