It is called the sciatic nerve. Mine would catch to the point I would almost fall. It starts hurting early in pregnancy and for some lasts all the way through. For some it will only act up once or twice. It is mainly from the increased weight of the uterus. Mine still hurts occasionally even though my daughter is 1! The only way I could get relief whenI was pregnant was to throw my left leg over my husband in bed at night. It would ease it some, enough to sleep! Good Luck and congrats.

I had a pain like this once -- it can be incapacitating. I had what was termed "periformis syndrome" (which would be the PS you refer to); caused by the nerve bundle being squeezed through a too small opening in the muscle tissue. Mine apparently was an injury from running, somehow. Being a male, pregnancy was not a factor. Unfortunately, there was nothing medically that could be done for my PS. A physical therapist put one of those shocker devices on my a** cheek, and that seemed to help. I'm guessing that your pregnancy has, indeed, caused this. Sorry.

Your nerves are probably being squashed, you need to talk to your midwife about this at your next antenatal appointment. She'll know what it is and how to ease it :)
