Go on the date but let him know that it's only because you care about him as a friend. If you turn him down and he's sensitive, he'll be crushed no matter what. If you tell him you're not interested in him but offer to go on the date anyways, he'll realize you are telling the truth and not just giving him some half *** answer.

I've been that guy before and my friend did this exact thing - I really appreciated the fact that she did this and we had a great time. We are still friends to this day - 15 years later!

If he is really a friend you will tell him the truth instead of constantly making up excuses for not going on a date with him. The truth may hurt, but he'll get over it, and you'll save a friendship in the process.

Say something like this. Good friends are hard to find, and that is what makes you very special to me, it would hurt deeply if I had to go on living with out you as my friend.

That you want to keep it platonic. But then don't expect him to hang around forever because guys get tired of being the boy next door. BTW the boy next door is usually the best bet in the long run :)

well this happened to one of my closest friends. I personally think u should tell him that u do like him and maybe that u should go out in the future. tell him that it would be awkward if u both went out and that u wouldnt be still the best of friends as u once were. but the most important thing to tell him isabout your feelings inside no one can make you desicion for u.

Well just tell him that you don't want to risk your friendship and even though he's a wonderful guy you don't want to get involved with anything right now.
