For them to get along and for you to cope with bringing them up! My first 2 have 4 years between them and i think i may have left it too long.

I think 3 to 4 years is good. If they are 4 years apart then hopefully you won't have two in college at the same time! And if they are three years apart, they won't be in Junior High and High School together (which can be horrible for either of them what with social status and little sis or big brother there all the time spying) but they will be close enough to get along (as best as siblings can) at home. My twin sister and I were three years younger than our brother and it was great.

My kids however, are 16 years apart so they are both basically 'only' children as far as growing up and sharing stuff goes.

I plan my kids about 3 years apart. That way only one is in diapers at a time!

5 years. That way the first child is mature enough to 'take care' of himself/herself (to some extent) as well as the new baby, without always needing your attention.
If you have support from someone to take care of them or you want to have kids real soon, then 2 years is ok.
