Death has no purpose,
and life has no meaning for an atheist. How depressing.
He thinks he is the sum of a constant six billion year accident.
And they think a theist is illogical.

FUNNY TO ME HOW THIS CAN BE AN OPINION, UNRELATED TO WHAT THE TRUTH IS? I have a better question why is a man's life any better than a Dog's or a cat's life if all things are equal and just, yes some people are much worst than a dog or a cat so it is fitting that they should go to a worst place than none existence. But even a pet can stays alive in our memories. Is subconscious any less real than conscious world. It changes nothing what we believe, you are not your own God, so your beliefs mean nothing in reality. You cannot rot because you are gone either way. It takes a higher power to come back in some other form. Many animals are smarter than some men, so the same question applies to them also.
Animals can be evil and good just like men, what we see happening in cities of America with gangs is really no different than watching animal behavior, so maybe they all go to same place. Even with a heaven and hell, eventually the people in hell would be totally destroyed or else evil people have eternal life

No, I don’t believe in reincarnation (if I did that would make me something other than an atheist by definition). I don’t know any of the answers to the reincarnations questions (try asking a Buddhist or a Hindu – they believe in reincarnation).
Yes, an atheist believes that THOUGHT simply stops existing when the body is dead.
There is no heaven (by the Christian definition of heaven) and there is no hell (by the Christian definition of hell). There is a vast, wonderful expanse of universe with absurdities and mysteries waiting to be discovered. There are so many of these wonders that they won’t all be discovered while humans exist in this universe, which is an amazing thought.
Life is wonderful! We’re so fortunate to have it in all the infinite possibilities; we exist and are even capable of appreciating that fact. Aren’t you happy? That’s MY good news to you. :)
Hope this helps.

Well, technically I am not an athiest I am a spiritual agnostic. I dont believe in heaven or hell or life after death as described by any organized religion. What I believe has more to do with where my personal spirituality resides, I am strongly connected to nature and the circle of life. I believe not that the earth has a conciousness but that it has an energy all its own, a cycle a circle of death and renewal. I believe there is no beginning and no end, I feel most religion is too linear, and that is a human concept not truly found in nature. To me death is not an end but a beginning of new life not as the same being but as the reused energy which sustains other life. I believe that when we die everything that we were returns to the womb of the earth and is used again in the lives of other living creatures. For example when I die all the water and nutrients and chemicals in my body will be used again to bring new life to the earth, insects use the body as food to live so they can reproduce, a plant or tree may use the water released from my body to produce seeds, and so in that way my death brings life to others and maybe the energy released by my body will live a thousand other lives after my death. I may not be conscious of this but maybe small pieces of me live on in countless other life and contributes to the neverending cycle of life. Nothing in this world simply ends, nothing to me is a straight line, you live, take life and energy from others to do so and in the end when you die others take your life and energy so that they may live in turn thier death brings life to others and so on and so forth a never ending cycle everything that made up your body and energy in life is reused by others after death and so in truth what we really are does continue to live on after our bodies are gone. I do not believe that our unique conciousness will ever "come back" but what we are truly made of, all our energy is not wasted it is used again.
Not for me embalming and attempted preservation I find that offensive and in many ways I feel that trying to keep our body from rotting away is an affront to other life, like we dont want to share what is ours to give at the end.... new life for other living beings.

apparently from the wording of your quwstion you are not an atheist. It's interesting though, to see the perspective of people with different beliefs. one of the things that all humans have is the freedom of choice. the bible says in Deuteronomy 30:19,
...... that I set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life.... We have the freedom of choice and God holds us acountable for that choice. Read it if you have the chance. i'm so glad that i have chosen life and i hope the asker of the queation has also. john 14:6 says, Jesus saith unto him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh to the father but by me. so to choose life is to choose Jesus in case you didn't catch it.

It would be nice to believe in some sort of an afterlife, but there's simply no credible evidence to tell me there is one. So it seems most likely we just cease to be. Oblivion. Yeah, it's scary, but I don't let that fear drive me to lie to myself.
Edit: kcbubbles it's not that it wouldn't be nice, or that I wouldn't want it if it were real, it's that it simply doesn't exist. No amount of hoping and faith will make it real. I don't have any more choice about whether I want heaven or not than I do about whether I want super-powers or not.

yes, i feel i will be reincarnated, as i believe i have been before. different times, different lands, different worlds, different gender, different languages, different species. no, this current life is pretty bad. if i believed in purgatory i would say this is it. i don't believe i will come back as a tree or any other form of plant, but i may make the earth fertil enough to enhabit such a being. and i believe there is a rest period in a heaven type place. and then we continue on our journey, to another world and another life.

You ask questions about death because you're afraid of it. If you learned how to live your life, you wouldn't be scared of death. You don't want to die, because you haven't lived yet. And you decide that Jesus giving you eternal life is a wonderful idea - you don't have to worry about changing your life, because you're gonna "live forever". How would I know what happens after you die? I ain't never died. If I was terrified of death, I'd sure as hell want to know what happens, if I become a tree, an animal, or just disappear. When you are happy and just full of laughter, do you think about death? You can't think about death and be happy. So why must humans waste their time thinking about things that make them miserable.

Indeed atheists believe death is very much identical to how you were before your parents were even born. You simply don't exist.
Things such as reincarnation, afterlife, etc are dismissed by atheists because they are supernatural.

If I believed people were reincarnated then I wouldn't be an atheist now would I? I do believe in ghost. I have been talking to ghost for years. Although I would say most Atheist do not believe in them. Christians believe in ghost at least they are in your Bible. Of course life has meaning for an atheist. Life has one purpose for everyone. The perpetuation of the species. xx

The only thing to hope for after death is that, hopefully, you made a great enough impact on peoples lives that they remember you for a long time, and tell others of your deeds. Other than that, nothing.
