Microwave Play Dough
1 c. flour
1/2 c. salt
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1T cooking oil
1 c. water
1 pkg. unsweetened Kool-Aid or food coloring Add food coloring or I pkg. Kool-Aid to water. Add all the ingredients in a microwave bowl. Stir every minute until it forms a ball. Takes 3-5 minutes. Let it cool & store in a Ziploc in the refrigerator.

Heres the salt dough recipie

Salt Dough

2 cups flour
2 cup water
1 cup salt

Knead dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5-10 minutes until satiny smooth. This prevents cracking and uneven baking. After molding, bake at 300 for 30-40 minutes. Check often. Apply color by using paste food coloring mixed with eggwhites before baking for a golden brown finish. Spray with a clear sealer like polyethylene.

The one I use at the daycare is not cooked in the microwave, but it is similar to Sir J's:
2 C. flour , 2 C. water , 1 C. salt , 2 T. oil , 2 t. cream of tartar , food coloring, flavoring or koolaid for scent

Combine flour, water, salt, oil, and cream of tartar in saucepan. Stir over medium heat until mixture is no longer wet, and has the consistency of playdough. Add food coloring. Add flavoring or unsweetened koolaid for scent if desired. Keep stored in a covered container.

The kids love to play with the playdough and it is does not stick to carpet like store bought playdough does. ( I don't usually put the scent in it.)

Much easier is salt dough, obviously wont harm them when they try and eat it plus you can bake what they make and let them paint it afterwards!!!!
Oh the joys of growing up poor!

Only costs a few pence to make a shed load sure the recipie is out there somewhere.
