The quick answer is no. The D40 can only use AFS lenses which really limits the range of lenses available. The D50 is more of a serious hobbiest camera while the D40 is more for people who aren't so much into creative photography but need some of the features not offered on a point-and-shoot.

The D40 was crafted to meet a very tight price point. The D50 was too but that price point was several hundred dollars higher. If you are serious about photography go for the D50.

The D40 is positioned BELOW the D50. The D50 has better auto-focus and it can use more lenses.

No it's not. It's lacking some features of the D50. I feel it is aimed at beginners who want to try out DSLR's without spending too much money. See the links in OMG's answer as well as this one, which is a side-by-side comparison:
