that's silly, such a "firmament" would have multiplied atmospheric pressure and crush everything to putty.

Well you can liken the "Firmament to an overhead sea, even if it was 12 inches in thickness it would have been enough to shield us from the Sun's radiation 50 fold. Hence the longer life expectancy from less radiation. Radiation rays of any form have the property to "evolute", if you will, degrade the DNA in living cells, However you also have to take into account the pureity of the Human Race up to the "Windows of Heavens" being opened. This "pureness" also would add time to life expectancy

it isnt clear what the firmament was... is it merely water above like clouds as opposed to the waters below like seas...

you do not need a firmament to be missing to change the environment... a lesser magnetic field might hold the atmosphere less and the reduced air pressure from being lost to solar wind and possibly be less hospitable... reduced air pressure could be a factor but there could be others.

likewise the greatly increased amount of salt in the ocean, the colder oceans as well as the lower air pressure and catastrophically changed geology all could contribute

frankly we dont know why... we do know the earth used to support much larger creatures before... 200 ton sauropads... dragonflies with 3 to 4 foot wingspan... 6 foot centipeed like crtieers... 7.5 ft long beaver... etc etc... very large creatures compared to now... something changed

we dont know.. there was a doctoral investigation trying to predict the climate effect of a water firnament and it appeared the greenhouse effect was extremely high... there could be other things... like water in vapor but not clouds?? not sure

actually I read such a report of a dig verifying the older ages in something like a grave yard, but it was in the 70's and I can not remember where. My guess is you can do the research and find it under the heading of whoever those guys are that do the digging, I forget hmmmm is it antripologists hmmm I think there is another group.

read the answers so I have to edit. My step son in law is in the doctorate genetics commmunity. He successfully, removed the aging gene in a simple life form. This applys because if it were not for a DNA code which moves us into the aging and death scenario. If that code could be removed, the switch sort of turned off we would live as long as they did. He thinks it might be a simple switch to install, and would eventually, spread to everybody. So not as complicated as some seem to think. He thinks the switch might be able to be turned off in the near future.

First: the firmament isn't missing. It is described and defined as air.

Second: Many are the people who have tried to obtain evidence that supports or rejects the stories in the bible, of which this is one. Supposedly, it is not meant to be.

Most of them say that lives WOULD have been longer with a firmament. But I am not aware of any evidence that there was a firmament that helped people live longer.

No. In fact, it is biologically impossible, for genetic reasons that are too involved to explain here.
