It depends on what you classify as mentally ill. Some people only believe illnesses like schizophrenia are considered 'mental illnesses', whereas depression is not, others consider all forms of depression, anxiety,...to be mental illness. Most suicides are caused by depression or anxiety, so if you believe that these are mental illnesses, then a person probably has to be mentally ill to be suicidal. If you don't think these are illnesses, then a person does not have to be mentally ill to be suicidal.

It all depends on the situation that the person comes from. If some one is suicidal then they need not be judged but helped to over come there feelings of dis-pare. Often a way suicidal people dealing with this problem is to "cut" which many people think that is an attempt to end their life but really is a way to end their emotional pain that is dragging them down by inflicting physical pain to them selves. So the answer to your question is no, mental illness is...undefined.

generally, suicide is considered to be a form of mental illness. it can stem from depression, or other feelings which originate in the mind. if a person wishes to seek help from suicidal feelings, they need to talk to other people and find ways to make life happier. unfortunately, for me it's a "been there, done that" story. i know first hand what it is like to be stuck in that terrible place. i can only thank that i had so much support from other people.

I believe the answer is yes. Situational depression can be very intense....the question is do you have a "plan"? If you have a plan you should really get some help ASAP....if you are just having "I want to die" feelings that is called suicidal ideation and I believe that everyone gets that at some point in their life....

definitely..my boyfriend committed suicide by hanging himself in his apt. 2 years ago..he was very depresse yet he masked his feelings with a smile..come to find out that he would be asking randome suicidal questions to his friends, like; "do you think this fan could hold the weight of my body"? no one took him serious because he was a good church-going guy, who always smiled? He began to distance himself from me, so i just thought that a s a guy he needed some time alone, biggest mistake of my life? People tellme it was premeditated, but i cant fatham something like that being premed? he made his phone calls to family a wk prior to the act, he paid bk loans to friends, etc? and stopped talking to me..he loved me? why would he stop talking to me? I found him the first of the month in his apt. i found him hanging..i cant ever get that image out of my head, and i will always feel partially responsible for life because i couldnt help him?

always take suicide seriously...and dont take yourself out of hte equation ever? never give space, that was my mistake?

due to financial difficulty with his business..he was tired of being broke all the time--i miss him dearly
