I don't think obsessive-compulsive is quite an apt description. It is more along the lines that the mythology makes adherents feel good, gives them a sense of community, and makes promises on which delivery need never be made.

Actually the religion of atheism can be decscribed as compulsive obsessive behaviour.
Today, many people call themselves atheists and it is frequently argued that atheism is the only rational viewpoint. However, it is also often said that there is no such thing as a real atheist. This is supported by the Bible which declares: “only a fool says in his heart that there is no God.”
So which view is correct?
If we give a just little thought to this matter, we can see that there is no argument at all as to whether the qualities and properties usually attributable to God actually exist. This is certain and beyond dispute. So really the only disagreement is over the source or origin of these attributes.
Furthermore, we can see that there are only 2 possible alternative sources of these attributes. It is self evident that something material can never come out of (absolute) nothing of its own accord (First Law of Thermodynamics). We know that something material exists (i.e. the universe), therefore something must have always existed, something must be eternal and have had no beginning. This eternal something, can only be: 1. A force or power independent of the material, and thus the Creator of the material, OR 2. The material itself.
So an eternal nature must be possessed by, EITHER:
1. A Supernatural Power.
OR
2. Matter/energy.
Consequently, all the other qualities, powers and potentialities which exist in the universe must be attributable only to ONE OR OTHER of these two alternative 'eternal' sources.
Some of the qualities existing in the material world.
Laws of Nature, Information & means of information storage (DNA etc.), Life, Design, Order, Motion, Love, Choice, Good, Beauty, Emotion, Intelligence, Kindness, Personality, Morality, Awareness, Justice, Wisdom, Hope, Joy, skill, etc. There is no disagreement that these qualities are present in the universe. The only dispute is over the source or origin of these qualities.
SO
Is the stuff of the universe (matter/energy) eternal? Does this 'eternal matter' intrinsically possess all the above qualities, or the inherent potential to produce them of its own volition?
OR
Is there a power greater than, pre-existing and independent of, the material? A Supernatural Creator of the material, possessor and originator of all the above attributes evident in the material creation?
IT CAN ONLY BE ONE OR THE OTHER
SO THIS IS THE ONLY DISAGREEMENT, AND IT IS AN AGE, OLD DISAGREEMENT.
No atheist would attempt to claim that mankind is the originator of all these qualities. We are not eternal, we did not create ourselves or the universe, something greater than us essentially exists'. Is that something a Supernatural Creator God? Or a purely material power which must intrinsically possess all the qualities, powers & potentialities usually attributed to a Supernatural Creator God?- - A material god? - - A pagan god!
THEREFORE, THE CHOICE IS CLEAR,- - FACE THE FACTS!- - ATHEISM (or even agnosticism) IS NOT AN OPTION. YOU MUST PAY HOMAGE TO A POWER WHICH IS GREATER THAN YOURSELF, either; The Creator God of the Bible, or; the material pagan god or gods' (represented by: Mother Earth, Nature, the Sun, Moon, or idols of stone, wood etc.) which you must necessarily imbue with the SAME ATTRIBUTES.
SO NOW CHOOSE YOUR GOD?

Excuse me. There is a lot of evidence supporting the facts in the bible.
The man Jesus is documented in the history books
There is scientific evidence of a Flood
Noah's Ark has been sighted from space
There have been Egyptian chariot wheels found at the bottom of the Red Sea
If the resurrection of Jesus was to be heard in a courtroom today, on the available evidence given, they would deduce that Jesus did return from the dead.
I must disagree with you, the facts - He was born, He died and was raised to life. He ascended to Heaven. He didn't die again! That means He is here for us all to have a relationship with.
Call me what you will to appease yourself but these are the facts.:0)

There are indeed people who have mental problems connected to religion (manias, obsessions, whatever--I'm not a psychiatrist), but they are a minority.
On the other hand, people who are religious are still the majority around the world, as well as in some western countries, and used to be the majority in all countries less than fifty years ago. Moreover, a couple of centuries ago ALL the people who had lived until then were religious.
This would redefine drastically our concept of normality, wouldn't it? Because following the traditional (as in mainstream psychology) understanding of normality, it is the atheism which is an abnormality.

No it can't actually be described that way. According to Wikipedia:
Religion is a system of social coherence based on a common group of beliefs or attitudes concerning an object, person, unseen being, or system of thought considered to be supernatural, sacred, divine or highest truth, and the moral codes, practices, values, institutions, traditions, and rituals associated with such belief or system of thought. It is sometimes used interchangeably with "faith" or "belief system"[1], but is more socially defined than that of personal convictions. The development of religion has taken many forms in various cultures. "Organized religion" generally refers to an organization of people supporting the exercise of some religion with a prescribed set of beliefs, often taking the form of a legal entity (see religion-supporting organization).
As for evidence to support the bible there is plenty. However what someone believes is often times not supported fully or inpart from the bible, but more on a personal conviction of interpurtaion from ones life experiences.
For me its not about religion. Its about believing that there is a God and that he is holy, loving and compassionately awaiting for me to come home to him.

I personally do not feel like religion is a necessity. I think that a majority of religion is the need to feel like part of a group and a way to find faith and strength in a religion rather than in yourself. I mean it seems to only cause conflict. I think that the world would be a much better place if people focused less on religion and differences and more on just being good kind people. Unfortunately you cannot tell that thoery to many people bc you are automatically chastised for your thoughts.

How incredibly misinformed you are. The Bible has tons of evidence to support it. You just turn a blind eye to it.
Besides all of the archaeological and historical evidence, many have tried to disprove it, only to become believers.
Simon Greenleaf, a founder of the Harvard Law School, actually set out to disprove the Gospel accounts. After he finished his research, he made a rather bold statement. The Gospels would stand up to the rules of evidence in court.
Further, no other body of ancient work comes close to having the volume or nearness in time to the original texts. No one really disputes Julius Caesar's The Gallic Wars (10 manuscripts remain, with the earliest one dating to 1,000 years after the original autograph). No one really disputes Pliny the Younger's Natural History (7 manuscripts; 750 years elapsed). Or Thucydides' History (8 manuscripts; 1,300 years elapsed). No one disputes Herodotus' History (8 manuscripts; 1,350 years elapsed). No one really disputes Plato (7 manuscripts; 1,300 years elapsed). No one really disputes Tacitus' Annals (20 manuscripts; 1,000 years elapsed.) Homer's Iliad, the most renowned book of ancient Greece, is the second best-preserved literary work of all antiquity, with 643 copies of manuscript support discovered to date. In those copies, there are 764 disputed lines of text, as compared to 40 lines in all the New Testament manuscripts.

Yes your right! Or most other religious text for that matter.
I would think most people would have some common sense in this matter, I don't understand why some people do not believe in evolution and other scientific and religious contradictions that are proven.
I think evolution and the big bang is more proven than some god created the earth in 6 days then planted adam and eve on it. What happened with the dinosaurs in this story, yet we have PROVED that they where around?
If there was actual proof that there is a god I would believe it, but there is as much proof that there is a god as my magical giant pink and yellow grasshopper that lives in the sky that I worship every night and make all my life desisions on. As HE created the world, not god!
Are all religions right ? How can they all be right, yet all have different gods.
Also check out http://www.abarnett.demon.co.uk/atheism/ for the Bibles 'proof', fun to read lol.

You are wrong, there is basis and scientific facts concerning the stories of Noah's ark and the great flood.
Because you don't question and study the bible you make this broad statement that only proves your ignorance, it is ok not to believe if that is what you choose, it is not ok to insult and name call those who choose to believe, but we forgive you because as christians we believe it is an important thing to forgive those who are less fortunate and do not understand the mysteries of the bible.
You will be visited by ghosts of past present and future that will change your views and your obstinant judging of others. Peace.

Yes, it can. But is does arise from a deep need in people to have certainty about "the big picture" - origins, death, etc. Atheists - I am one - know that the "certainty" of religion is in fact flawed, and that a non-religious approach to life is more honest and mentally healthy.
