I'm doing research on whales. I need to know about whaling in the 1800's: Whaling Industry, when did whaling end, and feel for what life was like back then. I assume there still is whaling, so it didn't end.

Hi. Whaling was done primarily for whale oil, a really sad part of our history. A good true book is "The Tragedy of the Essex." Give a good insight. : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_the_Heart_of_the_Sea:_The_Tragedy_of_the_Whaleship_Essex

Whales were hunted for oil which was used as a lubricant and as lantern fuel, for "rendered fat" which was made into candles, for meat, for baleen which was used for the hoops in women's clothing, and for bone which was carved decoratively.

You should read Moby-Dick. Half the chapters talk about whaling as a way of life.

Japan and Norway still hunt whales.

And so you know... Whaling is still happening today. Small groups of people still whale even though it's outlawed by the UN etc.
