I have been invited to an evening party at an upscale home in So. California, where recommended dress is "Cocktail attire." I have the perfect little black dress...do I need to wear stockings? I am tanned, and prefer the look of my legs without stockings. What is appropriate?

Oh my goodness, I would say that stockings are DEFINITELY not necessary!! I don't even own a pair of stockings. I didn't think people wore those things anymore! If you have a hot little black dress and some cute shoes to match, the last thing on everyone's mind is whether or not you're wearing stockings!

You should always wear stockings with a cocktail dress, even in southern California. Bare legs are fine with a sundress, but always wear stockings for a dressy affair. I would wear very sheer black.
If you prefer the look of your legs without stockings you are buying the wrong kind. Bare legs never look as good as they do with ultra sheer stockings, they give a sheen to your legs that is like rubbing your legs with baby oil that never dries. That's why they are so popular all over the world. If you can't stand pantyhose that is understandable, most of us younger girls wear stockings all the time anyway. they are so much more comfortable and cool than pantyhose.

Well it depends, if its an upscale party i would think you would want to be wearing some kind of hosiery. If you wear hose and you want to go to the bathroom and remove them if someone notices just say they got a run and you removed them simple enough. But I think the looks of stockings with a sexy little black dress is required.

It is never appropriate to go without stockings to an event where 'cocktail attire' is specified. You may prefer how your legs look tanned. If so, it's your body so commit this little faux pax if you wish. Do you want to be the person the other women were talking about not having the social finesse to wear stockings to the event, however?

I think for an "upscale cocktail attire" affair you most certainly should wear stockings.They are not a back in the day thing.They should be worn under your dress for any fancy affair.

The key words here are "Evening Party" and "Upscale." If you want a second invite, wear the stockings! You can always wear a very sheer nude pair, but stockings are a must!

Since it is an evening cocktail party, I would most likely wear stockings.
That being said, since it is a house party, people might be a little more relaxed about what to wear, so if you are more comfortable without hose, don't wear them.

Stockings are the appropriate attire under any dress, unless you are going to a barbecue and wearing sandals. God bless****

I would say yes. Unless you will be wearing sandals or open-toe shoes. I hate the look of stockings in these types of shoes.
